Malware infested Clubhouse ads ran on Facebook

It is not an uncommon practice for hackers to stash malicious content in advertisements, however these ads are commonly only actually ran by companies lacking the proper resources to check their legitimacy. In this instance a malicious ad for the recently trending app 'Clubhouse' appeared on Facebook last week that traced back to a fake Clubhouse themed website ran on Russian servers. When opened, the goal of this specific malware attack was to infect the isolated machine with ransomware. At least nine ads were placed this week between Tuesday and Thursday. Several of the ads said Clubhouse “is now available for PC,” while another featured a photo of co-founders Paul Davidson and Rohan Seth. Clubhouse did not return a request for comment. The ads have been removed from Facebook’s Ad Library, but our friends at TechCrunch published a copy here.
